The Ill is a 29.8 kilometer long low mountain range in the Saarland , which has its source in Urexweiler and flows into the Theel from the left .

Surname

The name Ill is said to come from the Celtic ilara = to hurry.

course

The Ill rises north of Urexweiler and crosses it in a southerly direction. The villages of Hirzweiler , Hüttigweiler and Wemmetsweiler then follow the course of the river . There the Ill turns to the west and reaches Illingen , turns here to the northwest and then flows through Wustweiler and Dirmingen . There it turns again to the west, thus reaching Eppelborn and Bubach-Calmesweiler and shortly afterwards flows into the Theel from the left.

Renaturation

In 1990 the special purpose association Illtalrenaturierung, today: Zweckverband Natura Ill-Theel, was founded, which in the meantime has redesigned the landscape around the Ill and its tributaries so naturally that beavers and many other disappeared animal species could be resettled.
