It flows towards the Tiefen Graben, after about 100 meters it is led in an underground pipe and reappears immediately after crossing under the Autobahn 8 . It then runs through the upper Merchtal immediately south of the Hahnwiese Absinkweiher, west of Merchweiler, and then flows into the Ill in Illingen, south of Kerpen Castle .

Renaturation
In 1990 the special purpose association Natura Ill-Theel was founded, which in the meantime has redesigned the landscape around the Ill and its tributaries close to nature. As a result, beavers and many other lost animal species have re-established themselves .
The construction of a new mud pond for the Göttelborn pit in the upper Merchtal would have threatened the Upper Merchtal nature reserve with its variety of animal and plant species.
After the action group Rettet das Merchtal collected more than 3500 signatures, the original plan was rejected and a new location about 200 meters north was chosen. Scientific studies have shown that the extensive area is worthy of protection, especially because of the sandy pastures . A variety of animal species are native to the upper Merchtal. 62 bird species have been identified, nine of which are on the red list . Of the 36 species of butterfly that have been found, nine are on the red list. In the meantime, the upper Merchtal has developed into a local recreation area , through which the Saar-Nahe hiking trail also leads.
