Illarion Illarionovich Vasilchikov ( Russian Илларион Илларионович Васильчиков * 1805 , † November 12 . Jul / 24. November  1862 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ) was a Russian lieutenant general , adjutant general , governor-general and member of the State Council .

Life

Illarion Illarionowitsch Wassiltschikow was born as the son of Illarion Wassiljewitsch Wassiltschikow and his first wife Vera Petrovna Wassiltschikowa . His brothers were Alexander Illarionowitsch Wassiltschikow (1818-1881) and Viktor Illarionowitsch Wassiltschikow (1820-1878).

After attending school, he joined the Russian Army and became an officer in August 1825, a colonel in 1837, major general in April 1846, adjutant general in October 1852 and finally lieutenant general in 1858. He was governor of the Kostroma governorate in 1847 , of the Volhynia governorate in 1848 , from 1852 to 1862 governor general of the Kiev governorate general and from June 1862 until his death the commander of the Kiev military district.

During his time in Kiev, he tried to develop the infrastructure and culture of the city, so that he earned the nickname "good boy" in Kiev. He had several hospitals built, roads built and expanded. Furthermore, during his reign as governor-general, the opening of the Nicholas Chain Bridge over the Dnieper , the construction of the Vladimir Cathedral and the monument to Vladimir the saint .

Vasilchikov tried to improve the legal conditions of Jewish life. He was able to significantly relax the restrictions on Jews staying in Kiev. On the other hand, he tried to suppress Polish and Little Russian separatism.

After Taras Shevchenko was denounced on his last trip to the Ukraine and arrested on July 15, 1859, Vasilchikov, after speaking with Shevchenko in Kiev, ordered his release.

Vasilchikov died in Kiev at the age of 57 and was buried in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
