In Heaven, Under the Earth is a cinema documentary from 2011 by Britta Wauer . It is about the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .

content

In Heaven, Underground, tells stories about the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee, which has existed since 1880, has been in continuous use since then and is now the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. It is the third cemetery that was created by the Jewish community of Berlin.

The film sheds light on the changes in the cemetery over the years due to changes in the Jewish community and gives an insight into the traditions associated with the cemetery. The focus is on people who visit the cemetery in search of their family history and are accompanied on their journey of discovery through the site. Large parts of the film consist of interviews, among others with Rabbi William Wolff , but also with neighbors and a police officer guarding the cemetery.

background

Britta Wauer looked for people with documents and information about the Weißensee cemetery with the help of the magazine aktuell - magazine for former Berliners . She received letters from all over the world and thus compiled numerous stories about the cemetery. In 2010 she published a book based on original documents and photos by photographer Amélie Losier, telling the story of the Jewish cemetery in German and English.

Reviews

“A documentary full of sensitive conversations, amazing flashbacks and light-hearted music. A dead place becomes a garden. To mourn, remember and be happy. "

- The mirror

“In Heaven, Below Earth” is a cemetery film that couldn't be more alive. Sad and funny. "

- The daily mirror

“Sometimes the beauty of the pictures and the music seem like evidence of a surrealistic dream world. Here the film's obvious concern to promote the preservation of the cemetery leads a little to its idealization. However, it is more about underlining the charisma that this place has than about a manipulative dramaturgy. "
