The valley of death - no living soul has ever returned from there. But not the devil, as the legend of the red peoples reports, lives there. The Wheeler Roulin holding slaves in a secret mercury - mine caught, enveloped by toxic fumes. Among them is the German aristocrat Martin von Adlerhorst and the son of the chief of the Chiricahua- Apache Lata-nalgut, the "strong hand".

Together with the beautiful but unscrupulous Señorita Miranda, Roulin has made the alcoholic Maricopa chief "Iron Arrow" an ally. All three are targeting the mysterious Paloma Nakana - a young woman who lives under the protection of the Apaches and is looking for her lost lover: Martin von Adlerhorst.

Winnetou and Old Firehand must do all they can to bring peace to Indian land. They are supported on their way by good friends: Sam Hawkens and Hobble-Frank. The two western men , however, have a lot of trouble trying to find the clever quack Dr. Jefferson Hartley, who sells adulterated miracle water, to protect from all sorts of angry customers.

It gets really dramatic when Old Firehand's adventurous son Harry is kidnapped by Roulin into the mercury mine and the "Paloma Nakana" is to be sacrificed to the gods by the Maricopas in a secret ceremony ...
