Imagine is a pop song written by John Lennon . It was first released in September 1971 on his album of the same name Imagine and a month later as a single . The piece describes the vision of a society free of religion , nationalism and property , is a call for peace and is considered a hymn of the peace movement .

Video

Also known is the music video for Imagine , which shows Lennon playing on a white grand piano in his villa in Tittenhurst Park , while his wife Yoko Ono opens all the interior shutters to flood the room with daylight. Next to the front door is a statue that Lennon used on the cover of the Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). With the material filmed for the song, Lennon presented the song to the public for the first time on the Dick Cavett Show , as Lennon had not yet been able to rehearse with a live band at that time. The show, which also featured Yoko Ono, was taped on September 7, 1971. Lennon and Ono made a partly documentary film for the album Imagine , which was shown on American television in December 1972.

reception

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , the US radio company Clear Channel Communications put the song on a list of 166 songs that were "lyrically questionable" and should no longer be broadcast for the time being. In 2004 the US music magazine Rolling Stone published a list of the " 500 best songs of all time ". Imagine ranks third on this list . Liverpool Airport, named after John Lennon, displays several large-format quotes from Lennon songs, including Imagine , in the lobby . The central airport motto “Above us only sky” is also from Imagine .

The piece is also frequently interpreted in the jazz genre ; the versions by Gonzalo Rubalcaba , Herbie Hancock (with Pink , Seal , India Arie & Jeff Beck ), Toots Thielemans and Vijay Iyer should be mentioned here. In the rock genre there are versions of ManDoki Soulmates and A Perfect Circle, for example . The music project 1,000 Days, 1,000 Songs published the title on its website in March 2017 as a protest against the policies of US President Donald Trump .
