1,000 days, 1,000 songs
1,000 Days, 1,000 Songs is a political music project initiated by American author and editor Dave Eggers . The initiative started on October 10, 2016 under the name 30 Days, 30 Songs with the aim of releasing a song for a "Trump-free America" every day by November 8, 2016, the day of the US presidential election . Due to the keen interest, the project was renamed 30 Days, 50 Songs . After Donald Trump's election , the initiators decided to expand the playlist for the duration of his term of office. Every week from Monday to Friday a song should be added as opposition to Trump's politics.
Motivation and Goal
Dave Eggers designed the playlist together with music manager Jordan Kurland. Previously, as part of the 2012 presidential election , the two had called for Barack Obama's re-election with the 90 Days, 90 Reasons campaign. The idea of a musical protest against the Republican candidate came to Eggers during a Trump rally in Sacramento in June 2016, when, to his amazement , he heard songs by Bruce Springsteen , the Rolling Stones , Queen or Elton John - artists who supported Trump is very unlikely. The original aim of the project was "to motivate voters to stand against bigotry , sexism , hatred and ignorance". Two new titles were released at the beginning of 2017 in cooperation with the Secretly Canadian label , which runs a similar project under the name Our First 100 Days . The songs are available on YouTube , Spotify and Apple Music . The proceeds from the streaming will go to the non-profit organization Center for Popular Democracy . In July 2017, the delivery of new songs was stopped after day 172 on all platforms without giving a reason.
music
The first 50 songs on the playlist are exclusively unreleased material, including numerous new compositions and live recordings made available for the first time. The musical spectrum of the songs ranges from indie to folk rock to electronica and hip hop . While some songs address Trump directly, such as Locker Room Talk by the Cold War Kids , others deal with the US political situation in general. In addition to some newcomers, the artists represented include established mainstream musicians such as REM , Moby , Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand . While the focus was initially on current compositions, later mainly older songs with a political message were selected which, in the opinion of the initiators, fit with it, including Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land (1945), Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come (1964) or David Bowie's This Is Not America (1985). On the day of Donald Trump's inauguration , it was decided to do a live version of REM's It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) .
Jim James, front man of My Morning Jacket , contributed two new songs to the playlist.
Cold War Kids processed Trump's misogynous statements from 2005 that founded the Pussygate scandal.
A rediscovered Woody Guthrie - song about Fred Trump has been reinterpreted for the Playlist.
The Mexican-born Lila Downs made Trump's wall plans the subject of The Demagogue .
reception
The action was received positively by the predominantly democratic critical scene. The Atlantic called the first three songs "very lovely music" and praised them as "surprisingly entertaining examples" of politically inspired music. Chris Cillizza from the Washington Post advertised the initiative as a "Playlist of songs that Donald Trump will hate" and saw it as a novelty that well-known musicians write and publish new political material with this intensity. The YouTube -Musikkritiker Anthony Fantano judged the list ambivalent. An anti-Trump stance is well anchored in the mainstream and, in his view, there is hardly anything to be said about the Republican that has not already been said. Above all, Fantano criticized the links provided on the website , behind which "instructive" texts are hidden. He praised the contributions by Death Cab for Cutie , Vinnie Paz and Jesu / Sun Kil Moon . As a negative example, he cited the Moby song Trump Is on Your Side , which he found "condescending" towards blue collar workers . The best anti-Trump song was also YG's FDT , which was released in March - not affiliated with the project .
Media from German-speaking countries, including the Berliner Zeitung , HAZ and ORF , also reported on the unusual project.
The playlist
The list contains only the first 50 songs listed on the website between October 10, 2016 and the election in chronological order. In addition to the artist and title, the authors are listed. Newly recorded songs are highlighted in color.
