American President Donald Trump in September 2016

When FDT is a protest song , in which the West Coast rappers YG and Nipsey Hussle against the political ambitions of the late US president Donald Trump pronounce. Nipsey Hussle, who grew up with Mexicans in Los Angeles , was particularly shocked by Trump's statements about ethnic minorities and thus justified his motivation for participating.

The song begins with a spoken intro by YG, followed by the hook line in which "Fuck Donald Trump" is repeated eight times. The stanzas question Trump's eligibility for the highest office in the state and paint a bleak picture of a possible Republican presidency .

" He too rich, he ain't got the answers
He can't make decisions for this country, he gon 'crash us
No, we can't be a slave for him
He got me appreciatin' Obama way more. "

The text contains several socio-cultural allusions. So in addition to Barack Obama about Rodney King , a well-known victims of police violence , and the Mexican drug lord El Chapo ( "Surprised El Chapo is not tried to snipe you" ) mentioned. In addition, the political organizations Black Panther and Nation of Islam are named. There is also an allusion to Trump's occasional appearances in show business ( "This Comedy Central ass nigga couldn't be the president" ). While the song explicitly evokes an “era of smoldering gang wars” ( “Have a rally out in LA, we gon 'crash your shit” ), it also arouses hope for “solidarity in a diverse city”.

" And if it's time to team up ... let's begin
Black love, brown pride in the sets again
White people feel the same as my next of kin. "

The single cover shows Trump's face with an additional mouth instead of an eye. The other eye is painted over with a red X.

Music video

A five-minute video for the song was directed by Austin Simkins. The film begins with a personal text intro, which conjures the year 2016 as a turning point in the history of the United States and calls for the youth to vote.

This is followed by original footage from an incident in February 2016 in which around 30 African American students were excluded from a Trump election rally in Valdosta, Georgia . The video, in black and white , shows a group of people, mostly African American and Hispanic , marching through the streets of South Los Angeles in a demonstration . The colors blue, red and green are specifically used to highlight clothing or police vehicles, for example. The second half shows a video of Donald Trump's controversial speech in which he announces the construction of a wall in Mexico . This point of view of Trump is also taken up in the text of the song ( "You built walls? We gon 'prolly dig holes" ).

Filming took place in South Los Angeles, where YG and Nipsey Hussle grew up. At the corner of 71st Street and Crenshaw Boulevard in Hyde Park , the LAPD had a stop filming. The official reason given was the use of souped-up cars for the purpose of street races. According to a spokesman, there was no violence among the hundreds of people who took part in the shoot. A news bulletin about this incident can be heard at the beginning of the video.

reception

The song made waves shortly after its release and was scrutinized by the Secret Service . The agency contacted YG's record company Def Jam with the aim of checking the lyrics of his upcoming album Still Brazy . Eventually, some lines from FDT , including the allusion to El Chapo, fell victim to censorship and were replaced by pauses in the album version of the song. YG had even considered ditching the track, but was persuaded by producer DJ Swish to stick with it.

In July 2016 it was published under the title FDT Pt. 2 a remix of the song with new stanzas by G-Eazy and Macklemore , in which, among other things, Trump's attitude to Islam is discussed. YG named his next tour after the song Fuck Donald Trump Tour and had a dollar of every ticket sold donated to families of police violence victims.

After the election was voted in favor of Donald Trump, the song gained new popularity in late 2016. Especially protests against Trump made use of the song's statement. The Rolling Stone had described the song in the summer as "catchy middle-finger track," the LA Times called him after the election as "most prophetic, wrathful and unifying protest song of 2016". In terms of its importance, it has developed from a “warning shot” to a “defiant outcry”. YG regretted the Republican's electoral victory and saw his prejudices against power and the United States, which a young African American had cherished, confirmed.

Despite the great attention, the commercial success of the single released as a download was limited. In the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs of the Billboard charts , FDT reached number 50 on November 26, 2016 - eight months after its initial release - and in the Bubbling Under Hot 100, the song was number 10 for a week.
