Nipsey Hussle 2011

Nipsey Hussle (born August 15, 1985 in Los Angeles , California ; † March 31, 2019 there ; actually Ermias Asghedom ) was an American rapper. He belonged to the West Coast hip-hop scene from the mid-2000s and released numerous mixtapes as well as the successful album Victory Lap in 2018 , for which he received a Grammy nomination. He was shot dead outside his Marathon Clothing clothing store in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019.

Life

Ermias Asghedom grew up in Crenshaw, South Los Angeles with his single mother. His father was from Eritrea . As a teenager, he joined the Rollin 60's Neighborhood Crips . His pen name Nipsey Hussle, often stylized as Nipsey Hu $$ le , is a play on the name of the entertainer Nipsey Russell and dates back to his youth.

In 2005 his first mixtape Slauson Boy Volume 1 was released . He also chose the name for his independent label . In 2008 he signed with the Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records . Bullets Ain't Got No Name Vol. 1 and 2 followed in 2008 and Vol. 3 in 2009, which cemented his reputation in the scene. He collaborated with Drake on the track Killer and on Upside Down by Snoop Dogg . His own debut single Hussle in the House was released in 2009.

In 2010 he was part of Artists for Haiti and featured on the benefit single We Are the World 25 for Haiti .

The well-known US hip-hop magazine XXL chose him as one of the ten freshmen in the April 2010 issue and named him the most promising newcomer of the ten selected artists. Other rappers were Freddie Gibbs , Wiz Khalifa , Big Sean and J. Cole . LA Weekly also believed in him and treated him as the next big thing out of LA. His debut album South Central State of Mind was announced for December 21, 2010. The first single was Feelin 'Myself with a featuring by Lloyd . The album should also feature guest contributions from Trey Songz , Jay Rock and Sean Kingston . As a further appetizer, Nipsey Hussle released the mixtape Red and Blue Make Green with Jay Rock. But the plans failed. Nipsey Hussle fell out with Epic Records, which released him from his contract in fall 2010.

Nipsey Hussle then founded the label All Money In and published the mixtape series Marathon.

In 2012 rumors circulated that he had found his new home on Rick Ross' label Maybach Music Group (MMG). His single Proud of That with Ross also fueled the rumors. He was also a guest star on MMG's album Self Made Vol. 2 (2012). His collab mixtape Raw , published together with Blanco via Guerilla Entertainment, also contained features by artists in the MMG environment. Ultimately, however, it was only a matter of announcements.

The mixtape Crenshaw was released on his own label in 2013 , which became a huge success. The album, which includes features by Rick Ross, Dom Kennedy , Slim Thug , James Fauntleroy II , Z-Ro , Skeme and Sade , was released both as a free digital download and as a 1000-piece limited hard copy. The latter sold within 24 hours.

He then announced his album Victory Lap , which was only released on February 16, 2018. In the meantime he published the highly acclaimed single FDT ("Fuck Donald Trump ") with YG as a statement on the US election in 2016 . In 2016 he became a silent partner in the Marathon Agency, a commercial company that markets brands . On June 17, 2017, he opened the clothing store Marathon Clothing as a branch.

In 2018 his debut album Victory Lap was released , which reached number 4 on the US Billboard 200 . The album was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap Album category.

death

At 3:25 p.m. on March 31, 2019, Hussle was shot five times in the parking lot of his clothing store in South Los Angeles. He and two other injured people were admitted to the local hospital, where his death was determined at 3:55 pm. He was 33 years old. The alleged perpetrator was later arrested. Presumably it was a gang crime. Although Hussle used to be part of a gang himself, he was committed to combating gang violence until his death.

Nipsey Hussle was a valued member of society where he lived and was involved both as an employer and as a donor. For example, he rented office space in his neighborhood to startups from the often disadvantaged residents. Furthermore, he supported his old elementary school with donations of money and goods. He also campaigned against gentrification and sponsored art projects. His death was noted with dismay by many colleagues including ASAP Rocky , Talib Kweli , Gucci Mane , 21 Savage , Snoop Dogg, YG, The Game and Rihanna .

He was posthumously nominated in three rap categories at the 2020 Grammy Awards and awarded for Racks in the Middle as best rap performance and Higher as best rap collaboration (with DJ Khaled and John Legend ).
