Katja, a teacher, and Jan Grönefeld, a tax attorney, move after their house is ready to move into. A stressful time lies behind them, which particularly overwhelmed Jan. At the inauguration ceremony, Katja realizes that her husband has been cheating on her for a long time. She then demands a divorce. Jan uses the change to break out of his stressful job and opens his own small restaurant. Katja turns back to her hobbies. Both get along better and better, also because they manage to treat each other fairly and continue to look after their children Jakob and Elisa together. Since Jan still has a lot to do with the opening of the restaurant, Katja supports him in hiring a new waitress, who he finds in Aimee, a very special French woman.
Just as Katja begins to open up to Jan again, he falls in love with Aimee. The two become a couple, a child emerges from the connection. That means more stress in everyday life, also because little Luca screams a lot. Jan is increasingly longing to return to the security he felt with Katja. Katja has now fallen in love with her colleague Bernhard, whom she has known for years. After losing his wife, the two slowly grow closer. Just as Bernhard is proposing to Katja, her cell phone rings and it's Jan's turn. His mother Beeke died quite surprisingly. Katja gives him support in this difficult hour. But then she also tells him about her marriage plans and kisses him, she says that it should be allowed to say goodbye. Jan realizes once more how attached he is to Katja. For him, she has always somehow always remained his wife.
After Jan learns at the registry office that the marriage has been canceled, he rushes to Katja, who just like him has come to the decision that she cannot marry Bernhard. The couple agree that they have always loved one another.
