Imperator: Rome is a global strategy game by the Swedish computer game developer Paradox Interactive , which was released on April 25, 2019. It is the successor to Europa Universalis: Rome , published in 2008 .

development

The game is developed by Paradox's in-house development studio Paradox Development Studio . The producer is Johan Andersson , who was involved in projects such as the Europa Universalis series and the Hearts of Iron games.

The Demetrius update was released on May 2, 2019 . Numerous bugs were fixed and the performance significantly increased.

marketing

The development was announced on May 19, 2018 after speculation that a sequel to the strategy game Victoria II should appear. April 23, 2019 was specified as the planned publication date.

The game is officially distributed on Steam , in the in-house Paradox Plaza and on GoG . In addition to a "normal" version, which is available for € 39.99, there is the deluxe version (€ 54.99), which in addition to the main game includes the exclusive Hellenistic World expansion , a digital artbook, background images and content for the Paradox contains its own forum.

From February 12, 2019 until the release, a so-called Dev Clash Week took place every week, in which the developers compete against each other. The editions were broadcast live on the publisher's Twitch page and uploaded to the Paradox XL YouTube channel.

reception

The reviews were mixed. Initial tests by reputable trade magazines were quite positive. The large, detailed game world and the numerous functions that the game offers were praised. Above all, the difficult entry into the game was criticized.

The players initially rated the game much more negatively. A month after its release, Imperator had a "mostly negative" rating on Steam, with 38% positive feedback. At GoG, Imperator: Rome achieved 2.8 out of 5 stars.

Game mechanics

Imperator: Rome is based on the Clausewitz engine , which has been used in Paradox 'grand strategy games since 2007. In addition, a software called Jomini was integrated, which should simplify the creation of mods.

The game itself is set in the age of antiquity . The player starts in 304 BC. BC, which is given in the game with 450 AUC , which represents the time calculation of ancient Rome . In terms of contemporary history, it takes place during the time of the Diadochian Empire , after the death of Alexander the Great and before the rise of the Roman Empire. The playing map stretches from the west of the Iberian Peninsula to India and contains over 7000 cities, making it the most detailed playing map in a grand strategy game by Paradox, according to Paradox Games. As is usual with other Paradox Grand Strategy games, it is possible to play any nation on the map. In purely playful terms, it is a mix of the other Paradox titles. There are elements such as the display of the battle outcome from Hearts of Iron or the detailed character management from Crusader Kings II and the diplomatic variety from Europa Universalis . However, there are also innovations such as barbarian invasions.

The aim of the game is to preserve your nation until the end of the game and, optionally, to expand and create an empire.
