Stellaris

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stellaris is a real-time based 4X global strategy game from the developer Paradox Development Studio . The player has the task of exploring space, colonizing it and establishing and maintaining a star empire through diplomatic, economic and military measures. The game was released on May 9, 2016 for Microsoft Windows , Mac OS X, and Linux . A port for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released on February 26, 2019 . This makes Stellaris the first grand strategy game available for modern game consoles .

Gameplay

Stellaris does not give a story, but lets the player - after selecting and adapting a species and their behavior and technologies - start on their own with a small initial fleet in order to build up a star kingdom. At the beginning, in addition to the home planet and spaceport, the player has a small space fleet consisting of research ship, construction ship and a handful of military ships. With growing size, military and diplomatic tasks join the initial research and development management as soon as the growing empire encounters other populated worlds. Later in the game, galaxy-wide random events occur, such as an invasion from another dimension or from outside the galaxy, or a robot revolt that plunges the entire known universe into crisis and does not only affect the player's empire alone. The developers hope to eliminate a general shortcoming of strategy games of this kind through these crises: Later on, a faction can become so overpowering that motivation and fun suffer from it.

With the release of additional paid DLCs, game elements were introduced that are intended to add depth and complexity to some mechanics towards the end of a game play. A big focus of the development team is on the diplomatic aspects.
