The 1985/86 season of the highest Mexican soccer league Primera División was played in a different way than the other seasons in the 1980s because of the 1986 soccer World Cup . In a certain way, it followed the example of Torneo México 70 , which was not held in the usual way because of the 1970 World Cup , which was also held in Mexico . The 1985/86 season was held for the first time as part of an Apertura and Clausura , the traditional form of the Mexican football championship since the 1996/97 season, in which two champions are determined per season; a master of the preliminary round and a master of the second half. While in the regular championship all teams in the league compete against each other in one home and one away game in the league round, in the 1985/86 season only those teams that were assigned to the same group met in the league round.
The first tournament, which was held between July 12, 1985 and October 6, 1985, was called Prode 85 and consisted of four groups of five teams each. Accordingly, a team only played eight matches in the group games. The second tournament, which was held between October 11, 1985 and March 1, 1986, was called México 86 and consisted of two groups of ten teams, so that each team played 18 matches. After both tournaments, the Liguillas took place, for which the best eight teams (in Prode 85 the two best placed in each group and in Torneo México 86 the four best placed in both groups) for the quarter-finals of the knockout . System played in the final round. In both tournaments, the team of Tampico-Madero FC reached the finals, but failed in the first comparison against Club América and then at CF Monterrey .
At the end of the 1984/85 season , the CD Zacatepec rose to the second division and therefore did not take part in the special tournaments of the first division season 1985/86. The Cañeros were replaced by the newcomer from the previous season, CD Irapuato . Since there should be no relegated team at the end of this special tournament, but with the Cobras Querétaro a promoted team was added, the following 1986/87 season was played with 21 teams.

Because of a severe earthquake on September 19, 1985 in Mexico City , the (then) home of the semi-finalists Atlante and América, in which more than ten thousand people were killed, the semi-finals were held a week later than originally planned.
The Tampico-Madero Fútbol Club gambled away a 4-1 lead from the first leg and thus missed their first championship title since the 1952/53 season , when they were still known as Club Deportivo Tampico. The decisive goal in favor of Club América came in the 119th minute of the second leg with a penalty converted by Eduardo Bacas .
