Victoria - An Empire Under The Sun is a real - time global strategy game for Windows and Mac OS from the developer Paradox Entertainment , which is set in the age of imperialism . The game has similarities with the games Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron, also developed by Paradox . It was followed by the game Victoria II in 2010 .

Gameplay

The player directs the fate of a nation and controls the economy, politics, research, domestic and foreign policy as well as warfare for it. All nations worldwide can be played, both large (e.g. German Empire / Prussia , USA , Russia , Austria-Hungary etc.) and smaller ones (e.g. Siam , Persia , Portugal ). In addition, you can claim colonies to gain prestige and thus increase your area of influence.

The game has a system of so-called victory points. The aim of the game is to get as many points as possible. The points are worked out in the following categories:

  • Claiming prestige - Colonies, winning wars, conducting social and political reforms, research or historical events.
  • Industry - building factories, switching workers and farmers to skilled workers, and improving infrastructure.
  • Military - the size and quality of the army and navy.

The player is required to develop his nation economically, culturally and politically. Many of the events that appear in the course of the game reproduce the historical course in political terms. The player also has the option of making historical decisions at any time, so that “what if?” Questions can be tried out and replicated. The complexity of the game and the differences in the starting positions make every starting position a new challenge. There are, for example, eight great powers, independent, uncivilized nations, as well as satellite states and dominions .

control

The world map , divided into provinces, is displayed in a zoomable top view . You can choose between different views, e.g. B. Political, geographical and risk of rebellion. The game runs in real time at a selectable speed, but can be paused at any time. All commands can also be given during the break. It is controlled with a mouse and keyboard .

Game modes

Single player

In single player mode, the player takes over one nation while all other nations are taken over by the computer. Each country is calculated individually, alliances between the player-controlled nation and computer-controlled nations are the rule. The computer-controlled nations are also at war with one another.

Multiplayer

In the multiplayer mode, several nations are taken over by players, but the gameplay does not change anything.

Add-on: Revolutions

With the add-on Revolutions , the game story was extended to 1936 and a score converter for Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday was added. So you have the possibility to export your Victoria game to HoI2: Doomsday (or HoI2: Doomsday Armageddon ) and thus lead the fate of your country until 1953 (or 1964).

Game technical features

  • Capitalists now build factories and railways independently, depending on the form of government.
  • Colonies are smaller and can no longer be claimed from the start (you have to develop technologies). That leads to a more exciting race for the colonies.
  • Parties are becoming more important, the form of government has a stronger influence on the game.
  • Comfort icons (e.g. it is shown when factories are not supplied with raw materials)
  • New events

successor

The game was followed by the 2010 Victoria II, which follows the same game principle. The playing time extends from 1836 to 1936. At first it was only possible to start the game in 1836, in the expansion A House Divided , which focuses on the American Civil War, a start date in 1861, at the beginning of the said Civil War, was added. The Heart of Darkness expansion did not add another start date to the game.
