Beginning of the Imster Gorge

The Imster Gorge is a bottleneck in the Upper Inn Valley in Tyrol .

The Imster Gorge extends over a length of around 5 km between Imst and Roppen . The valley is strongly narrowed here by the Tschirgant massif protruding from the north and does not have a flat valley floor. The Inn  flows through a gorge bordered by rock walls. The places ( Karres and Karrösten in the north, Arzl in the Pitztal and Wald in the south) are located on terraces around 100 m above the Inn. The Arlbergbahn runs directly on the right bank of the Inn, the Tiroler Straße rises on the left bank. The Inntal Autobahn bypasses the Imster Gorge through the 5.1 km long Roppener Tunnel . At its beginning, the gorge is spanned by the 32.5 m high Pitztal Bridge.

The Imst Gorge is a popular section for white water sports enthusiasts, its level of difficulty is between WW II-III and III-IV depending on the water level.
