action

Brigitte Müller is a ferrywoman at Höfgen and tells how she got the job and why she likes it. As a child, she took the greed ferry across the Mulde almost every day to visit her grandmother. At the age of about 13 she even painted a picture of the ferry house, which she still owns today.

When her parents and grandparents get sick, Brigitte often has to cross the river in the evening to visit her. She agrees with the ferryman Joseph that he will also take her across the river at a later time. So both get into conversation and sometimes drink a beer together, since Joseph's wife is seriously ill and is in the hospital. Brigitte talks about her six children, but she does not mention her constantly drunk husband. When Joseph's wife dies, their own marriage is also completely shattered and both decide to go their further path together. For the first few years, both of them operate the ferry, although there are always little friction, because only one person can be responsible. Then Joseph gets the offer to work as a caretaker at the school, which he accepts. Since that time Brigitte has been the only ferrywoman in the GDR who responsibly operates a yaw ferry, which involves hard physical work. In this way, she brings about 300 to 400 people over the Mulde every day for 20 pfennigs per person.

The camera accompanies Brigitte in her work as a ferrywoman, in her activities as a housewife and in the rest phases with and without Joseph. She tells a lot about what life means to her and that almost all of her wishes have come true.

criticism

Gisela Harkenthal expressed herself as follows in Neues Deutschland :

“What is striking about this directorial debut by Karl Farber is his attention to detail. One is amazed at the different character statements that walking or tripping feet over the jetty can make. "

Helmut Ullrich wrote the following in the Neue Zeit :

“But among the films that are about people of the present, I liked 'In der Strömung' by Karl Farber about the ferrywoman who translates people on the Mulde near Höfgen the most. Not least because the portrait of this simple, resolute woman succeeded in letting her speak naturally and openly about her life and work, her feelings and thoughts in front of the camera and microphone.
