action
In the middle of the Sahara , a team of researchers comes across a cavity nine miles down while exploring the area. In the period that followed, the employees suffer from delusions, and the majority of the workforce commits suicide. A private security service is hired to send an employee into the desert to see if everything is OK.
Thomas Jackman sets off during a sandstorm and only meets Dr. Christensen alive. She urges Jack (his nickname) to leave the camp together as soon as possible. She is not feeling good after seeing her colleagues go crazy one after the other. But Jack first wants to have clarity about the whereabouts of the rest of the workforce. She leads him around the site, shows him the open borehole. Dr. Christensen now comes aphrodisiacally close to Jack, but since she is not on the research group's list, he distrusts her. Then Jack hallucinations too , monstrous figures appear to him. Henceforth he sees the evil in Dr. Christensen and attacked them several times. Jack feels overwhelmed and calls for reinforcements over the radio. His madness culminates in the fact that he sets the research station on fire.
One of the scientists has been found half dead in the desert by a rescue team. Laboratory analysis of the gas sample he was carrying shows that the gas in the cavity he drilled into is toxic and is causing the hallucinations. Jack and Dr. Christensen are flown out by helicopter just in time. The injuries they inflicted on each other are treated in a clinic. Then Jack's mind fails again. After missing Christensen there, he committed suicide because of his delusions. Why the gas at Dr. Christensen, the only woman on the team, showed no toxic effects, remains unexplained.
background
The shooting period was from January 21st to March 21st, 2008. The desert shots were taken in Tunisia . A Budapest film studio was also used for the production, the cost of which is estimated at US $ 22 million.
The plot is based on a story that hit the media in the early 1990s. Russian geologists believed that they had drilled hell in Siberia .
The film was already being planned in 1995, at that time still within the Aaron Spelling Productions . The project was dropped when director John Carpenter canceled in favor of Escape from LA . When the project started again in 2006, Olivier Martinez and Radha Mitchell were the preferred candidates for the casting of the two main roles.
