Ines Schmidt (born March 19, 1960 in Berlin-Friedrichshain ) is a German trade unionist and politician ( Die Linke ). Since 2016 she is a member of the Berlin House of Representatives .

education and profession

After graduating from secondary school, Schmidt learned the trade of a tailor in 1976 . In 1994 she entered the public service and became a tram driver for the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). In parallel to her work at BVG, she continued her education and in 2006 obtained a technical diploma in labor law in Frankfurt am Main and completed further training as a project manager in 2014 .

In addition to her job at the BVG, Ines Schmidt was involved in women's representation, first being elected women's representative in the tram sector in 1996 and overall women's representative of the BVG in 1999.

Successes in women's and gender equality policy during this time are the women's advancement plan drawn up jointly with the board in 2003 (and amended in 2016) and the cooperative pilot project initiated by Schmidt with the support of BVG chairwoman Sigrid Nikutta with the Berlin Central Employment Agency, with which bus driver training was successful for Women have been opened, which is particularly beneficial for the long-term unemployed and single mothers.

Schmidt has been a union member since 2005. The project was launched by the European social partners, the International Association for Public Transport (UITP) and the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) as part of the European social dialogue and was intended to advance the increase in the proportion of women employed in transport professions.

Since 2015 she has represented employee interests as a member of the BVG supervisory board . She has also been the BVG's diversity officer since 2016 .

In the election for the Berlin House of Representatives in 2016 , Schmidt was on the state list of the regional association LINKE. Berlin elected to the House of Representatives. With her direct candidacy in the constituency of Lichtenberg 1 she got 25.0 percent of the first votes.

After moving into the House of Representatives, Ines Schmidt decided not to be re-elected as the all-women representative after 17 years and has since worked as a diversity officer at the BVG.

In the 18th electoral term, Schmidt took on the role of spokeswoman for women's affairs in the DIE LINKE parliamentary group. She is a member of the Committee on Health, Nursing and Equal Opportunities and the Committee on Economics, Energy and Operations.

Positions

Ines Schmidt mentions the compatibility of work and family, a life in security and without violence, equal pay for work of equal value and gender equality in management and executive positions as her main topics. In addition, she advocates a women's-friendly design of public spaces and the support of single parents, especially when returning to work.
