Sigrid Nikutta (2019)

Sigrid Evelyn Nikutta (born April 1, 1969 in Szczytno , Poland ) is a German manager .

As a member of the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn , she has been responsible for the freight transport department and chairwoman of the board of DB Cargo since January 2020 .

Since October 2010 she was previously CEO of Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). Until 2019 she was also the director of operations. Nikutta is the first woman to head BVG in the company's history.

Career

Eight weeks after she was born, Nikutta's parents moved from Poland to Herford . Sigrid Nikutta grew up in Enger in East Westphalia . She studied psychology with a focus on work, industrial and organizational psychology with a minor in education at Bielefeld University and received her doctorate in psychology from LMU Munich in 2009 .

Previous career with Deutsche Bahn

From 1993 she worked in the management of a medium-sized company in Bielefeld before moving to Deutsche Bahn in 1996 . At first she headed an education center in Saxony and from then on held numerous management positions in the education sector. In 2001 she became HR manager at DB Cargo , in the rail freight transport division of Deutsche Bahn. She took over the management of production and became spokeswoman for the management of the block train transport division in Mainz. In her last position, she was Head of Production at the Polish Schenker subsidiary DB Cargo Polska (then DB Schenker Rail Polska) in Zabrze .

Berlin transport company

On May 28, 2010 she was elected by the supervisory board of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) as chairman of the board and operations board and took office on October 1. On January 1, 2013, her contract was prematurely extended for a further five years. Since August 19, 2011, Nikutta has also been chairman of the supervisory board of BT Berlin Transport GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of BVG.

In 2012 she was awarded the “Mestemacher Manager of the Year” award from the Mestemacher large bakery and in 2011 was included in the list of “25 Top Business Women” by the Financial Times Deutschland .

It is Nikutta's merit that under her leadership, BVG has achieved positive operating results for the first time in decades. Since taking office, the number of passenger trips has increased from 922 million to over 1.1 billion trips. The number of employees rose from 10,140 to 14,700 in the same period. However, the number of trip cancellations at BVG has increased dramatically in recent years. In the meantime, due to the predominantly old and insufficient number of subways, the timetable had to be thinned out despite the increasing number of passengers, and more and more subway trips are canceled. Transport researchers blame the failed acquisition policy of the Berlin Senate, against which Nikutta did not act with the necessary energy. Employees also accuse her of having an obscure personnel policy. The largest contract in the company's history for the purchase of subway cars awarded to Stadler in 2019 was intended to provide relief. The unsuccessful bidder Alstom brought an action against the award before the Berlin Court of Appeal.

In 2011, in her first full year at BVG, Nikutta received a salary of 325,000 euros as the chairman of the board of the national company. In 2015, she earned 481,000 euros, in 2018, according to media reports, she earned 496,900 euros, making it third on the country's entire payroll.

The BVG board was redesigned in 2019. In addition to being chairman of the board, Nikutta took over the areas of finance, digitization and sales and in return handed over the operations area to the newly appointed board member Rolf Erfurt.

Nikutta's successor as BVG CEO will be Eva Kreienkamp on October 1, 2020 .

Board member for freight transport at DB

Nikutta was appointed to the Board of Management of Deutsche Bahn on November 8, 2019, with effect from January 1, 2020. There she will take over the new freight transport department as well as the chairmanship of DB Cargo AG. Nikutta's appointment to the board of directors of Deutsche Bahn had previously been considered for several years. According to supervisory board circles, it failed because of resistance from Richard Lutz and Ronald Pofalla . The decision on their appointment is largely due to Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer .

Memberships

Sigrid Nikutta is Deputy Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of the Institute for Railway Technology (IFB) and is a member of the Presidia of the German Transport Forum (DVF) and the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV). She heads the VDV's Eastern Regional Group and is a policy board member of the International Association for Public Transport (French: L'Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP)). Nikutta is also a member of the Presidium of the Association of Berlin Merchants and Industrialists (VBKI) and a member of the Senate of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Private

Sigrid Nikutta is married and has two sons and three daughters. Her brother Jörg Nikutta has been head of Germany at Alstom since 2017.
