Inferno was a hardcore punk band from Augsburg . They played successfully in the international punk scene in the 1980s and is one of the formative bands for the development of hardcore punk in Germany.

Band history

The band was formed on November 1st, 1981 on a beer whim. Igor and Zong already knew each other from the punk band Scandal. Howie (who called himself "Donald" until 1986) and Pez completed the first line-up. The song Ram It Up was written during this first rehearsal . At first the band named themselves Decontrol after a song by Discharge . A few months later, after Igor left, the band name was finally changed from Toxoplasma ("... Inferno, death and madness, ready to start at the push of a button ...") to Inferno after a text passage from the song " SOS " .

The first release, with Archi Alert on guitar and Praxe on drums, was the demo tape Gott ist tot . The band played fast hardcore punk, which was unusual in Germany at the time.

Thomas Ziegler, label boss of Mülleimer Records, signed the band for the first ultra-hardcore power sampler with the punk greats Normahl and Chaos Z at the time . Due to the exuberant reactions to their contributions, their contract was expanded to include an album. Tod und Wahnsinn appeared in the same year and made the band known internationally. About the Maximum Rocknroll - Fanzine contact with came Pushead concluded that the cover for the debut album designed.

Inferno participated in several international compilations in the next few years and also made a name for themselves abroad

In 1986 a split LP was released with the Japanese band Execute and the second album Hibakusha . In 1987 Archi Alert left the band and moved to Berlin, where he co-founded the band Terrorgruppe in 1993 . A new guitarist was found in Andreas. Other line-up problems arose and Rolf got on as a drummer. The band toured other European countries, including Yugoslavia and England.

The last album It Should Be Your Problem was released in 1990. It contains fast-played Thrash Metal or Speed Metal , which has little in common with old Hardcore Punk. The cover is also based on Thrash Metal and the lyrics were written exclusively in English. In 1990 the band broke up. In 1992 she got back together for a few appearances in 1992.

In 2007, a compilation of her publications on Destiny Records was published under the title Pioneering Work .

meaning

Inferno is a very influential band for the German hardcore and German punk scene. They were the first and so far only German band that Pushead designed a cover for. Another pioneering achievement is the release of a split LP with a foreign band. Despite the German lyrics, the band was also very popular abroad. Among other things, the band SOD covered the song Ram it Up as a hidden track of their Speak English or Die -LP.
