Ingo Wolff (born September 27, 1938 in Köslin ) is a German engineering scientist . He is emeritus professor for electrical engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Life

After completing high school in Solingen , Wolff studied electrical engineering from 1958 to 1964, specializing in communications engineering at RWTH Aachen University . He then did his doctorate in 1967 as a research assistant at the Institute for High Frequency Technology at RWTH. From the German Research Foundation , he received in 1967 a habilitation scholarship , where he earned his Habilitation in high-frequency engineering in 1970 at the RWTH Aachen. After several years as a lecturer for high frequency technology at the Technical University of Aachen, he was appointed an extraordinary professor in 1973.

Only a year later Wolff was the chair of General and Theoretical Electrical Engineering of the Gerhard-Mercator University Duisburg appointed . Three years later he became dean of the electrical engineering department (1977–1978). In 1981 he was offered the professorship for high-frequency technology at the Vienna University of Technology , but turned it down. Instead of going to Austria, Wolff became Vice Rector for Research (until 1984) and a member of the Senate (until 1990) at the University of Duisburg. In 1999 he was elected rector of the University of Duisburg. In this position he undertook extensive restructuring of the university, replaced the departments with faculties and restructured the cooperation between the departments. In the years up to 2003 he initiated and operated the merger of the University of Duisburg with the University of Essen, which was implemented by law on January 1, 2003.

In 1992, with financial support from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, he founded the Institute for Mobile and Satellite Radio Technology, today's IMST GmbH, in Kamp-Lintfort , of which he was part -time managing director from 1992 to 2003; from 2003 to the end of 2018 he was the full-time managing director of IMST GmbH.

Wolff has written 11 books on topics in the field of electrical engineering and has published 500 scientific papers in leading international journals and at international congresses. From 2009 to 2014 he was chairman of the Information Technology Society (ITG) in the VDE and cluster manager of the IKT.NRW cluster.
