Innovation and start-up center for biotechnology Martinsried
The innovation and start-up center for biotechnology Martinsried (IZB) is an innovation center or technology park west of Munich . There, 23,000 m² of laboratories, office and production rooms as well as other infrastructure offers for young companies in the field of biotechnology are made available. The IZB in Freising-Weihenstephan has been offering 3,000 m² of ideal conditions for business start-ups in the life sciences sector since 2002. The IZB is home to almost 50 companies with around 600 employees.
About the start-up center
The Fördergesellschaft IZB - Innovations- und Gründerzentrum Biotechnologie mbH is a subsidiary of the Free State of Bavaria and was founded in 1995 to support young companies in the life science sector and to locate them in Munich. So far, the Free State of Bavaria has invested around 78 million euros in the IZB since it was founded . This created around 2,300 jobs by 2016.
The shareholders of Fördergesellschaft IZB mbH are the Free State of Bavaria (76%), the municipality of Planegg (6%), the district of Munich (6%), the city of Freising (6%) and the district of Freising (6%). Since 1996 Peter Hanns Zobel has been the managing director of the Innovation and Start-up Center Biotechnology IZB in Martinsried and Weihenstephan.
history
In November 1993, the Bavarian State Ministry for Economics, Transport and Technology commissioned the Fraunhofer Management Gesellschaft to design a biotechnology center. The Minister of Economics, Otto Wiesheu, who laid the foundation stone for the start-up center on April 25, 1995, promised that the project in Martinsried would provide impulses for genetic research.
In October 1995 the innovation and start-up center for biotechnology was opened and Medigene, Micromet, RD Laboratories and CellControll moved in as the first four tenants. In 1997, Morphosys AG, one of today's most important German biotech companies, moved into the IZB and celebrated its IPO just two years later. In a third privatization offensive in 1998, the Free State of Bavaria, after 1994 and 1996, in the person of Edmund Stoiber, invested two billion marks in innovative key technologies and nationwide infrastructure. The aim was to make Bavaria the number one high-tech location in Europe, with Silicon Valley in the partner state of California as a model for “Gene Valley” in the Würmtal.
Between 1995 and 2002, two further major construction phases followed on the IZB site. The consequences - high rents, few parking spaces, construction work without promised compensation as well as the planned clearing of a local recreation area in the meantime - resulted in a negative attitude among the population of the municipality of Planegg. Against the background of the connection to the Munich subway network not yet implemented, the local opposition was able to beat the incumbent CSU mayor in the local elections in March 2002 with the statement “We don't need any new jobs here”. In 2002, in addition to the IZB on the Freising-Weihenstephan campus , the almost 7300 m² western extension in Martinsried opened. As early as 2007 the IZB reached its capacity limits again. In view of the economic upswing, many companies had expansion plans, which the start-up center was no longer able to satisfy.
It took a total of seven years until the then Minister of Economics Martin Zeil laid the foundation stone for the long-awaited West 2 section in 2009. In his opening speech, Zeil said: “Today, biotechnology in Martinsried can look back on an impressive development history that no one could have predicted when the IZB was founded 14 years ago.” At the beginning of 2012, an accommodation facility costing around 8 million euros was added as part of the further development The groundbreaking ceremony took place in March 2013 and was completed in October 2014 at a cost of EUR 8.3 million. At the opening of the IZB Residence CAMPUS AT HOME, Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs, Ilse Aigner (CSU), described the overall concept in Martinsried as "unique in Europe and on a par with research institutions in the USA".
The Freshmaker restaurant / café and two kindergartens (2002 and 2010) were built as infrastructure measures for the IZB. A chemistry school was also established (2010). In the campus hotel, the IZB companies and multipliers from the Martinsried / Großhadern campus have access to the Faculty Club G2B (Gateway to Biotech), which was also opened in October 2014.
Location and neighborhood
The IZB is part of the Martinsried campus . These include the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry and the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology , as well as numerous research institutions (Faculties of Pharmacy, Biology and Chemistry, the Gene Center, BioSysM, the Hemholtz Center's Hematology Center, the Center for Stroke and Dementia Research, the Center for Neuropathology and Prion Research and the Neurological Research Center) of the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU). The BMC Biomedical Center, which opened in October 2015, is also located on the Martinsried campus. Not far away is the LMU's Großhadern campus .
The IZB is located in the district of Munich in the municipality of Planegg in the Martinsried district . It can be reached from Munich from the Klinikum Großhadern subway stop on the 266 bus. The IZB can be reached by private transport to the north via the A 96 (Munich- Blumenau exit ), to the east via the A 95 (Munich- Kreuzhof exit ) and from Munich via Waldfriedhofstrasse and Würmtalstrasse.
Awards
