Innocent Gieselmann ( Ukrainian Інокентій Ґізель * to 1600 in Königsberg , Prussia ; † November 18 . Jul / 28. November  1683 greg. In Kiev , Hetmanat ) was a historian, Archimandrite of Kiev-Pechersk monastery as well as a professor and rector of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy .

Life

Innozenz Giesel came from a German Protestant family in East Prussia.

In Kiev he converted to the Orthodox faith and became a monk . At the end of the 1630s he studied at the Kiev Academy of Petro Mohyla . From 1640 to 1642 he headed the school of the Hoszcza monastery . The academy sent Innozenz Giesel to other cities for further training, but it is unclear where he went (Königsberg, Lemberg , Rostock ?) And whether he studied law or history in addition to theology and philosophy .

From 1645 he taught philosophy at the Mohyla Academy. Since 1645 he may have headed a monastery in Dziatłowiczy, and from 1646 a monastery in Kiev. That year he became rector of the academy. He took part in the election of Sylvester Kossów as the new Metropolitan of Kiev . In 1646 he had a theological argument with the Catholic Jesuit Czychowski about the filioque and other questions. In 1649 he published this under the title Colloquium Kioviense .

In 1650 he became Igumen of the Cyrillic Monastery in Kiev, in 1652 of the Nikolaikloster. In 1656 he became archimandrite (general head) of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra . Metropolitan Sylvester sent him to Moscow to see Tsar Alexei I to clarify canonically disputed questions between the Metropolis of Kiev and the Patriarchate of Moscow . He was honored by Alexei for his advocacy for Russian Orthodoxy.

In 1657, after Sylvester's death, he was proposed as a candidate for the Metropolitan, but was not elected and remained archimandrite of the cave monastery until his death.

Works

Innocent wrote a philosophical ( Opus totius philosophiae ), a theological ( dispute about God ... ) and a polemical work against the United and Catholic Church. Other texts ascribed to him are most likely not from him ( Peace of Man with God , Paterik of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra , a Catholic Catechism, a Summa on Thomas Aquinas and the influential Synopsis of the Kiev Empire on the history of Lesser Russia , with a description of the ancient unity of the " Russian peoples "). Innocent wrote his texts exclusively in Latin or Polish and, according to current research, was not able to write extensive texts in fluent, error-free Russian or Church Slavonic.
