action

Young Mexican Manni dreams of a better life as he grapples with gang rivalries and the difficulty of finding a new job without papers. His girlfriend Patty, on the other hand, dreams of starting a family with him and therefore takes it too far with a school assignment. Zuly, who also belongs to the same circle of friends and comes from a difficult family background, lives in a foster family and wants nothing more than to live with her birth mother again. Not everything is going smoothly in the middle class either. Cheerleader Aimee suffers from the pressure of her mother, even if she would like to win the beauty pageant herself. Her friend Carlos, a ROTC student on his way to a military career, cheats on Aimee with a housemaid whom he puts under heavy pressure for fear of negative consequences when he becomes pregnant. And Ricky suffers from being an outsider who fails to make connections. All of these stories come to a head with a dark and dramatic climax. Accompanied by documentary scenes at school, the joint recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance or mandatory drug raids, for example, the film shows a terrifyingly real-looking picture of hopelessness.

Reviews

"The episode film is a different kind of high school film and, in its seriousness, as entertaining as it is interesting."

- FM4

"... negotiates the fine line between a documentary sensibility and highly dramatized stories."
