history

Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Applied Sport Psychology and Leisure Education / for Leisure and Tourism Research (IFT)
Category: Research institute
Carrier: Ludwig Boltzmann Society
Facility location: Vienna, Salzburg
Management: Peter Zellmann , Reinhold Popp
Annotation: founded in 1987, converted into a private institute in 2005

As early as 1972, the Republic of Austria, represented by the ministries for education (at the time with sport ), economy and health, founded a leisure sports organization ( TSA practice model ) as a public-private partnership in the leisure sector , which in 1987 had 40,000 members across Austria.

From this practical experience, a research facility for empirical social research developed , which from 1987 was initially run as the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Applied Sport Psychology and Leisure Education , later as the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Leisure and Tourism Research on behalf of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society . Scientific and administrative directors of the institute were the social scientist and pedagogue Peter Zellmann (previously at the gymnastics and sports institute at the pedagogical academies and successor company U4-Fitness-Touristik, Sport und Animation ) for Vienna and later Reinhold Popp (studies in pedagogy, political science and psychology at the Universities of Salzburg and Innsbruck) for the Salzburg branch. The institute cooperated closely with the Federal Education Academy in Vienna and advanced to become the leading institution for research into tourism and leisure activities in Austria. In particular, the Freizeitmonitor (since 1972) and the Austrian Tourism Analysis (since 1995) two standard works on tourism in Austria have been developed.

With the reorganization of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society 2002-2006, with which numerous smaller institutes were closed or converted, the Institute for Leisure and Tourism Research was continued independently in 2005 and by Zellmann. Popp founded the Center for Future Studies  (ZfZ) in Salzburg , which is now integrated into the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences .

Zellmann subsequently worked intensively with the futurologist Horst W. Opaschowski , who until 2010 headed the Hamburg Foundation for Future  Issues (SFZ) of the British American Tobacco (there was already a collaboration between BAT-SFZ and IFT). There is also cooperation with Popps ZfZ Salzburg, the SPECTRA market research institute run by Peter Bruckmüller in Linz and, in particular, with the Vienna Institute L&R Social Research run by Ferdinand Lechner , Walter Reiter and Andreas Riesenfelder, which specializes in topics such as labor market, social and economic policy.

Agendas

Today, the institute specifically examines “the behavior, wishes and needs of people in work , leisure and vacation . The extended task also includes the qualification and clarification of the job description of the people employed in leisure and tourism .
