Insular G

The insular G (Ᵹ, lowercase ᵹ) is a letter in the Latin writing system .

The letter originated in Ireland. From there it spread over the entire British Isles and also found its way into Old England. In Middle English , the insular G finally developed into the yogh , which was used in parallel to the Carolingian G. In the Irish script , the letter is still used today.

The insular G is also used in other contexts. The lowercase letter ᵹ is used as a phonetic symbol for a voiced velar fricative (IPA: ɣ ). The capital letter Ᵹ is sometimes used for the same sound in written versions of Old and Middle English texts. ​​
