Semiconductor manufacturer
A semiconductor manufacturer is a company that makes semiconductor- based electronic components , either integrated circuits (IC) or individual components such as diodes and transistors (discrete semiconductors). The original, still existing business model is the Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM), which develops, produces and markets the semiconductor components itself.
specialization
Due to the enormous costs that arise both in the development and in the production of complex semiconductors with ever smaller structures, an increasing specialization has recently begun. In addition to IDMs, there are foundries that specialize in (mass) manufacturing, where many IDMs run part of their production. On the other hand, there are fabless companies that focus purely on development and produce exclusively at foundries. The situation is similar with the housing assembly and the test of the semiconductors, which are usually carried out by specialized OSAT companies (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test).
In addition to these fabless foundry business models, there are ASIC manufacturers who carry out development / production on behalf of customers and IP manufacturers who develop partial solutions ( modules ) for other manufacturers. Mixed forms are often found in practice.
Market situation
The largest supplier of semiconductor products (IDM and Fabless) is currently Samsung Electronics , which some time ago relegated Intel to second place. For 2018 it should be noted that Toshiba , in 8th place in the previous year, outsourced its NAND Flash division in 2018 and is therefore no longer represented in the top 10. Furthermore, contract manufacturers for semiconductor products are not included; an overview of these companies can be found in Foundry .
