Internal Void was an American doom metal band from Frederick , Maryland that was formed in 1987 and split in 2013.

history

The band was formed in August 1987. In 1989 a first self-titled demo appeared, which should be known under the name Smokestack due to its cover design , and in 1991 another called Voyage . Through the friendship with the bands Saint Vitus and The Obsessed , the band succeeded in getting Scott Weinrich to introduce the band to the German label Hellhound Records . With the songs Internal Void and Nothing But Misery the band could be heard on the label's sampler What the Hell . The songs were originally included on the Voyage demo. After the group had signed a contract with this label, the debut album Standing on the Sun was released in 1992 . The group consisted of the singer JD Williams, the guitarist Kelly Carmichael, the bassist Adam Heinzmann and the drummer Eric Little. This was followed by tours through the USA together with Saint Vitus before the band separated from Hellhound Records. In addition, the drummer Eric Little left the band in the fall of 1993. Ronnie Kalimon joined the line-up in 1995 as a replacement. The album Unearthed , produced by Chris Kozlowski , was released via Southern Lord in 2000 after the band signed a contract with this label in 1999. The album included a cover version of the Stray song After the Storm . In addition, the song Window to Hell , which was recorded in 1996, appeared on a split release together with the Italian musician Paul Chain . In September 2003 guitarist Kelly Carmichael and bassist Adam S. Heinzmann joined the band Pentagram . In 2004 Internal Void contributed the song Prayer for the Masses for the Saint Vitus tribute album A Timeless Tale by Ravenmoon Records . In 2004, the album Matricide was released on Dogstreet Records . On May 18, 2013 the band broke up.

style

According to Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia , the band on Standing on the Sun is often compared to Black Sabbath . According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , the band plays brute Doom Metal on Standing on the Sun , with " Ozzy whimpers and a tearful attitude". The songs would need several attempts until the “subtlety, beauty and elegance are revealed”. In Rock Hard, Andreas Stappert noted that Unearthed continued seamlessly with Standing on the Sun despite the long period in between . As a style, he gave "Sabbath-heavy Doom with a psychedelic touch and guitar work that is always reminiscent of the southern legend Lynyrd Skynyrd ".
