The International Civil Protection Organization or International Organization for Civil Defense ( English International Civil Defense Organization (ICDO) , French l'Organisation Internationale de Protection Civile (OIPC) , Spanish Organización Internacional de Protección Civil ) is an international organization founded in 1966 with headquarters in Geneva ( Switzerland ) . Your task is to develop sustainable civil protection .
The current Secretary General of the ICDO is Belkacem Elketroussi .
history
The ICDO emerged from the Association Internationale des Lieux de Genève , an association founded in Paris ( France ) in 1931 by the French surgeon Georges Saint-Paul .
The founding treaty was signed in Monaco on October 17, 1966 and entered into force on March 1, 1972.
purpose
The purpose is to ensure the worldwide development and improvement of organizations and means to protect the civilian population from the consequences of natural disasters in peacetime and from the consequences of the use of weapons in time of war.
Member States
In principle, membership is open to all states. Germany and most of the other Western and Latin American countries have so far stayed away from the ICDO.
There are also three other ways to participate:
- Observer status
- Associate member status
- Affiliated Membership Status : This status is open to international organizations and NGOs as well as private corporations.

structure
The ICDO consists of three organs: a General Assembly , an Executive Council and a Secretariat. The Council may set up additional commissions if it deems this appropriate for the achievement of the organizational objectives.
- General Assembly . All member states are represented in the assembly. Senegal currently holds the chairmanship, Pakistan is the deputy .
- Executive Council . The general assembly elects the members of the council for a four-year term; half of the members are replaced every two years. The following countries are currently represented: Egypt , Algeria , Benin , Côte d'Ivoire , Ghana , Haiti , Jordan , Cameroon , Mauritania , Niger , Pakistan , Russian Federation , Saudi Arabia , Senegal , Syria , Sudan and the People's Republic of China . The Council is currently chaired by Algeria, represented by Benin.
- Office. The secretariat includes the general secretary and other staff.
