history

The student movements that arose in the course of the national Catholic actions in Belgium and France led to the establishment of the “Christian Student Youth” in the late 1920s. The new youth movement found its spiritual role model in Father Joseph Cardijn , who also played a key role in the founding of the youth movement Christian workers' youth . In 1946 an international coordination office was set up in Paris . The IKSJ was founded as such in the mid-1950s, with Franz-Wilhelm Heimer and Walter Molt holding management positions from the New Germany Federation . Since 1998 the organization has had an advisory status with ECOSOC and an employee status with UNESCO. In 2007 JECI-IYCS was officially recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity as an international Catholic association of the faithful and included in their register . She is in close communication with the two associations of Pax Romana .

Self-image

The association sees itself as a student movement that wants to spread the gospel in the face of social change and strives for a just Christian life. It promotes solidarity between students and young people and advocates a just social order . Your goal is defined with a holistic development of the human being and a reasonable progress. That is why it supports other organizations, helps to found new associations and movements and promotes dialogue and the exchange of experiences. The pedagogy developed by the student association is based on the method of contemplation of life (" Révision de vie ") and demands that current situations are deliberately and critically examined. That in turn should lead to a life in the footsteps of Jesus Christ .

Organization and expansion

The management is incumbent on a "world council", which meets every two years. It is chaired by an elected president. Overall, the World Council consists of the President, the Secretary General and three delegates from the national associations. Worldwide the organization is divided into the "continental secretariats" Africa , Asia , Europe , Oceania and South America . The membership status differs in "membership movement", which were recognized by the national bishops' conferences , and in "collaborative members", these are associations of Catholic students at the national level. The JECI has 85 associations in 104 countries around the world. From Germany the Association of Catholic Student Youth is represented, which in the mid-1950s provided the European Secretary with Franz-Wilhelm Heimer , and then the General Secretary with Walter Molt .
