On the 2nd stage , Ebert was brought down 25 kilometers before the finish while handing a drinking bottle and he had to give up the race. Martin Gombert was able to break away from a leading group shortly before the finish and reach the finish on his own. He was the new front runner.
The 3rd stage was won again from a small group, the winner was Manfred Mücke. Gombert, who arrived in the main field, defended his leading position.
The fourth stage , the shortest with just 95 kilometers , turned into a heated battle. Again a group of seven drivers managed to break away a little. Johannes Knab was the fastest man in the group.
The 5th stage led on a mountainous course through the Hunsrück . After a long solo journey, Dieter Leitner won the stage. After the stage, Gombert had a comfortable lead of more than five minutes in the overall standings.
