The international research center for social and ethical issues (ifz) is an interdisciplinary research institute in Salzburg founded in 1961 and realigned in 2009 . The scientific staff of the ifz research socially relevant questions closely related to practice. The promotion of young scientists is a particular concern of the research center. The non-profit institution of ecclesiastical law is an institution of the Archdiocese of Salzburg . With international research on labor market policyor on development opportunities for children and young people, the ifz is part of international research networks and collaborations. German and English publications on socio-ethical topics appear regularly.

tasks and goals

The ifz deals with basic and current issues of social ethics . Questions about a successful life and good company are always the focus. The results of studies and research projects are intended to offer concrete assistance with social problems and their benefits should also be accessible and easy to understand for people outside the research organization. The ifz attaches great importance to an interdisciplinary and holistic approach with reference to practice. Interdisciplinarity, the promotion of young scientists and national and international scientific exchange are particular concerns of the research center.

The ifz was founded as a meeting place for science , business and society . The research facility feels committed to Christian tradition and Christian values such as human dignity and solidarity .

organization

The Edith-Stein House on Salzburg's Mönchsberg

The ifz's institutional seat is the Edith-Stein Haus on Salzburg's Mönchsberg . It serves as a space for research, events and various forms of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Clemens Sedmak ( philosophy and theology ) headed the ifz in his capacity as president until the end of 2017. Helmut P. Gaisbauer (political science) presides over the current executive committee. Martin Dürnberger (director of the Salzburg University Weeks), Michael König (director of Diakoniewerk Salzburg and Tyrol), Margareta Strasser (director of the language center of the University of Salzburg), and Father Virgil Steindlmüller OSB (director of the Lammertal parish association) act as vice-presidents. Michaela Rohrauer (Law) is the managing director of the ifz.

Research structure

Research at the ifz is currently divided into three main areas.

Research areas

  • Health and generations
Projects in this research focus deal with the connection between health and 'good life'. The focus is on questions about a successful childhood, dignified aging and dying, but also how people manage to maintain their humanity in difficult environments such as everyday hospital life or politics. The capability approach of Amartya Sen and the focus on fundamental human rights provide the theoretical framework in many of the projects.
  • Habitat and community
Practical projects are at the center of the focus on "Living Space and Community". This includes, among other things, the scientific support of the social festival Do something, then something happens. , an initiative that motivates citizens to take their own initiative in order to improve coexistence in different Austrian regions. The mentoring project 'Learning goes to school' is also part of this focus. The volunteer program trains students to become learning buddies in order to accompany and support students from socially disadvantaged families in their everyday lives.
  • Work and unemployment
The ifz also deals with recent developments within labor research, as well as changes in work and dealing with unemployment. Since 2015, the research center has also been involved in the RE-InVEST project as one of 19 research institutions. RE-InVEST is a project of the EU funding program Horizon 2020 , which is advertised by the European Commission . It examines social investment and labor market policy in the context of the EU's Social Investment Package (SIP) with the aim of providing impetus for a more solidarity and inclusive European Union.

Publications

A wide variety of German and English publications emerge from the research projects of the ifz. These appear in the form of books, edited volumes or articles. Thematically, they deal primarily with socio-ethical topics, such as the application of the capacity approach when dealing with children and young people, findings from work research and poverty reduction and work on the subject of resilience .

Together with the Center for Ethics and Poverty Research at the University of Salzburg , the ifz also publishes the series “Salzburg Contributions to Social Ethics”. Her focus is on the topics of poverty, social exclusion, inclusion and identity .

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the ifz published a commemorative publication in 2012 .
