Ioannis Zigdis

Ioannis Zigdis ( Greek Ιωάννης Ζίγδης , alternative spelling: Ioannis Zighdis ; * July 21, 1913 in Lindos on Rhodes ; † October 21, 1997 in Athens ) was a Greek politician.

Life

After attending school, Zigdis completed a degree in economics and political science at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens . He completed a subsequent postgraduate degree at the London School of Economics in 1940. After the end of the Second World War he worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) and served as chairman and director of numerous national institutions such as the public energy company DEI ( Dimosia Epichirisi Ilektrismou ).

As a member of the National Union of Centers ( Greek Εθνική Πολιτική Ένωσις Κέντρου EPEK ) he was Minister of State without portfolio since October 27, 1951 and became Minister of Industry on April 24, 1952. He resigned this office on April 24, 1952. From November 8, 1963 to December 31, 1963, he took over the office again, a third time from February 19, 1964 to July 15, 1965. During this time, he was a member of the Advisory Convention of the Council of Europe from 1964 to 1967 and also a member in 1966 of the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO . After the coup d'état of April 21, 1967 , he was arrested and was exiled to Folegandros and Syros for the following years .

After the end of the military dictatorship Zigdis Chairman of 1974 he founded the Democratic Center Union DEK (was Δημοκρατική Ένωση Κέντρου ) located on 5 February 1976 with the Center Union-New Forces EK-ND ( Ένωσις Κέντρου-Νέες Δυνάμεις ) of Georgios Mavros to the Union of the Democratic Center EDIK ( Enosi Dimokratikou Kentrou ) merged. After Mavros left the EDIK in 1981 and switched to the Panhellenic Socialist Movement PASOK ( Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima ), he became chairman of the EDIK himself.

On January 1, 1981, after Greece joined the European Community , Zigdis became a non-attached member of the European Parliament and was a member of this until October 18, 1981. During this time he was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs between February 9 and August 18, 1981. He held the position of chairman of the EDIK until 1989. In 1986 he advocated the establishment of diplomatic relations between Greece and Israel .
