Ion Valentin Anestin (born December 24, 1900 in Bucharest ; † December 6, 1963 there ) was a Romanian caricaturist , painter, sculptor, journalist and playwright . Above all, his political caricatures and art reviews made him known. He is the father of Ion Nuni Anestin , who also works as an artist and actor.

Life

Ion Valentin Anestin was born into a family from Craiova in the Romanian capital Bucharest. His father Theodor Anestin was a craftsman and worked for the Bucharest mayor's office. His grandfather Ion Anestin was an actor and friends with the famous playwright Ion Luca Caragiale . From 1918 to 1920 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown Bucharest, where he was tutored by the sculptor Franz Storck . He then moved to the Academy of Fine Art, which was founded by Arthur Verona .

After 1921 Anestin became a theater and art chronicler while writing numerous plays himself. During this time he first attracted attention with his satirical caricatures and portraits, which were very much influenced by the French way of drawing. Together with the writer Mircea Eliade , he published the magazine Est-Vest , which was published for the first time in 1927, but was discontinued after a few issues.

In 1928 he accompanied Vladimir Donescu , whose magazine Vremea he edited from 1931 to 1943, while he was responsible for the graphic design of the journal. In addition, he participated in a large number of different newspapers (including Epoca , Adevărul Literar şi Artistic , Timpul , Gluma , Cuvântul Liber , and the newspaper of the Romanian Communist Party Bluze Albastre ) and determined the drawing arts throughout the interwar period . Anestin, who was politically left-wing, also drew satirical portraits of well-known politicians of his day, both of Romanians ( Nicolae Titulescu , Alexandru Averescu , Lucian Blaga , Ion Inculeț , Ion Mihalache , Iuliu Maniu , Gheorghe Tătărescu , Octavian Goga ), but also of foreigners ( Adolf Hitler , Benito Mussolini , and Josef Stalin ). In addition, Anestin was known for inventing the cartoon character Ion Ion, who portrayed a young man with a top hat or bowler hat and umbrella, but not wearing a shirt or pants.

During World War II , a month before the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina , when Romania was still cooperating with the Axis powers , Anestin's drawings focused on denouncing Stalin and the Soviet Union in a series called Măcelarul din Piața Roşie ("The Butcher of the Red Square ") published by Gluma magazine . During the beginning of the Soviet occupation, Anestin was hindered in his work by the censorship period (1944-1949) before he was finally arrested. He died shortly after his release in the early 1960s.
