Iopamidol is an active ingredient that contains iodine and is used in medicine as a contrast medium . Administered intravenously, it is used to display blood vessels ( angiography ) during X-ray examinations . It was launched in 1977. Since the active substance is completely excreted via the kidneys , it is also suitable for excretory urography and for determining renal clearance . When administered intrathecally , iopamidol is also used for myelography and visualization of the cerebral ventricles .

The substance is found in surface waters, because sewage treatment plants cannot remove the substance well from the wastewater even with a fourth purification stage, with ozone or activated carbon. See also contrast media .
