The Iphofen-Gerolzhofener Steigerwaldvorland is the natural spatial main unit 137.1 within the Steigerwaldvorland (over-main unit 137) of the Mainfränkische Platten (main unit group 13). It is mostly a flat area between the lower natural areas of the Kitzinger Main Plain (137.0) and the very steep northern Steigerwald (115.00), the soils are mostly dominated by the Lettenkeuper . The natural spatial units of the Iphofen- Gerolzhofener Steigerwaldvorland surround the Steigerwald like a bracket in the north, west and south. The northern sub-units of the main unit protrude deeply until the first ascent of the Steigerwald mountains. They spread around Herlheim to the Schweinfurt basin (136) on the Main, and around Gaibach to the Obereisenheim-Wipfelder Maintal (137.08) and the Volkacher Mainschleife (137.07). The strip narrows around Wiesenbronn and Iphofen , where the Schwanberg step forms the transition into the Steigerwald. The southernmost place in the natural area is Nenzenheim in the Hellmitzheim Bay, which extends far to the east.
