The Steigerwald foreland of Neuses is a fragmented natural spatial unit (5th order) with the ordinal number 137.12 in the area of the Lower Franconian communities Frankenwinheim , Lülsfeld , Prichsenstadt and Volkach in the districts of Kitzingen and Schweinfurt .

location

The Steigerwaldvorland of Neuses (137.12) forms a sub-unit within the main unit Iphofen-Gerolzhofener Steigerwaldvorland (137.1). It is part of the Steigerwald foreland (137) and thus a natural area in the main unit group of the Mainfränkische Platten . In the north the Herlheimer Mulde (137.14) can be found, while the west is occupied by the Steigerwald (115) (possibly with the Hohen Steigerwald (115.0)). In the south the Dimbacher drift sand area (137.02) stretches along. With the Volkacher Mainschleife (133.07) a piece of the Middle Main Valley (133.0) protrudes into the Steigerwald foreland in the west . The north-west, on the other hand, is occupied by the Gaibacher Loess Plateau (137.13).

The natural area is located in the extreme north of the Kitzingen district and in the south of the Schweinfurt district. It stretches along the Rimbach and Weidach tributaries to the edge of the Steigerwald. In the far west, the districts of the Volkach districts of Krautheim and Obervolkach limit the Steigerwald foreland of Neuses. To the east, the Prichsenstadt district of Neuses am Sand , which gives the natural area its name, concludes. In the south the upper reaches of the Schwarzach flows through the area, there is for example Stadelschwarzach . The northern boundary is formed by the districts of Frankenwinheim and Schallfeld .

Landscape characteristics

The Steigerwald foreland of Neuses is the sanded, hilly foreland of the Steigerwald with less forest than in the adjacent areas. Overall, the area appears as undulating and hilly land, an image that is further underlined by the lack of forest areas. By protruding the so-called Volkacher Saddle , the Steigerwald foreland of Neuses stands out by 40 to 50 m compared to the adjacent Herlheimer Mulde. There are only deeper valleys in the river valleys of the Weidach, Rimbach and Sandelsbach. They are much narrower and tighter than the Schwarzach valley.

The landscape is strongly influenced by humans, agriculture in particular characterizes the Steigerwald foreland. Only in the west of the area are there areas with vineyards. The potential natural vegetation would create alluvial forest with alder , ash and spruce along the streams . In addition, forests with pure bedstraw, oak and hornbeam could be found.

Protected areas

In contrast to the neighboring areas of the Middle Main Valley, only a few areas are protected in the Steigerwald foreland of Neuses. In addition to biotopes , especially along the small streams, there is the southern Steigerwald foreland bird sanctuary around Lülsfeld with several protected areas.

Geology and tectonics

The Steigerwald foreland of Neuses is geologically highly differentiated. In the west, near the Steigerwald step, areas of the Lettenkeuper predominate , which are interspersed with gypsum keuper soils. They are covered by sands of different thicknesses, the relief energy of which, however, is much higher than in the adjacent drift sand areas around Dimbach and Albertshofen .
