Ipomoea cairica is a plant type from the genus of Morningglory ( Ipomoea ) from the family of wind plants (Convolvulaceae). The species is distributed worldwide in tropical areas.
description
Ipomoea cairica is a hairless, slender climber with bulbous roots . The leaves are stalked with 2 to 6 cm long petioles . The leaf blade is ovate to circular in outline, 3 to 10 cm long and 6 to 9 cm wide. It is divided into five to seven segments, these are lanceolate, egg-shaped or elliptical, with entire margins and tapering at the tip and base. Often pseudo stipules are formed.
The inflorescences are up little flowered cymes . The flower stalks are 12 to 20 mm long, the sepals are 6 to 8 mm long, egg-shaped and prickly. The crown is funnel-shaped, 4 to 6 cm long and purple in color. The stamens and the pen does not protrude beyond the crown. The ovary is hairless.
The fruits are spherical capsules that contain one or two hairy seeds .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30, less often 60.

The species is distributed worldwide in tropical regions, and it is often feral from culture . Originally it occurs from tropical to southern Africa, on the islands in the western Indian Ocean and from the Arabian Peninsula to temperate East Asia.
Systematics
Within the genre of morning glories is Ipomoea cairica in the subgenus Quamoclit classified, but is not unique to one of the sections of the subgenus.
One can distinguish between three varieties:
- Ipomoea cairica var. Cairica : It occurs from tropical to southern Africa, on the islands in the western Indian Ocean and from the Arabian Peninsula to temperate East Asia.
- Ipomoea cairica var. Gracillima (Collett & Hemsl.) CYWu : It occurs from northwestern Yunnan to Myanmar .
- Ipomoea cairica var. Indica Hallier f. : It occurs from Ethiopia to Kenya and in India.
