Irénée Félix René Rochard (born January 16, 1906 in Villefranche-sur-Saône , France , † March 29, 1984 in Paris , France) was a French sculptor .

Life

Rochard was the son of a painter; his brother was the actor and singer Armand Mestral . From 1924 to 1928 he studied at art schools for Beaux-Arts and Arts Décoratifs , from 1938 he was a member of the Société nationale des beaux-arts . In the interwar period , Rochard often met other animal sculptors, mainly François Pompon and Édouard-Marcel Sandoz .

Rochard created hundreds of animal sculptures, including horses, monkeys, gazelles, panthers, bear cubs, ducks, bisons, pelicans, dromedaries, dogs and others in the style of Art Deco. He used materials such as ceramics, wood, granite and marble, but had a preference for bronze.

Some figures were created in collaboration with Ugo Cipriani , which are often signed Menneville et Rochard . They show variations of a woman with one or more dogs, the female figures being made by Menneville (Cipriani) and the dogs by Rochard.

The city of Paris bought some of his works in 1937, 1950, 1954, 1965, 1968 and later, as did the city ​​of New York in 1938.
