Irakli Alassania ( Georgian ირაკლი ალასანია ; born December 21, 1973 in Batumi , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian politician and diplomat . From September 2006 to December 2008 he was Georgia's Ambassador to the United Nations in New York . In 2009 he became chairman of Our Georgia Free Democrats , which joined the Georgian Dream Alliance in 2012 . Since October 2012 he has been Minister of Defense in the governments of Bidzina Ivanishvili and Irakli Gharibashvili .

Life

He was born the son of General Mamia Alassania , who was murdered in the 1993 Sukhumi massacre . In 1995 he graduated from Tbilisi State University with a degree in international law .

Ministerial official

From 1994 to 1998 he worked in the Georgian Ministry of State Security, and from 1994 to 1996 he attended the Georgian Security Academy. In 1998 he moved to the Foreign Ministry. There he initially worked in the department for CIS and Russian affairs. He later went to the Georgian Embassy in the United States . From October 2001 to January 2002 he headed the security department in the National Security Council.

Vice Minister

On January 21, 2002 he became First Deputy Minister for State Security, in March 2004 first Deputy Minister of Defense. On July 16, 2004, he took over the post of Deputy Secretary in the National Security Council.

Special adviser

On September 28, 2004, President Mikheil Saakashvili appointed him chairman of the Abkhaz government-in-exile, based in Tbilisi . On February 15, 2005, Saakashvili became special envoy and advisor to the Georgian-Abkhazian peace talks. The Abkhazian government initially rejected the appointment, but then complied under pressure from UNOMIG . Alassania managed to establish good connections with various Abkhazian politicians during this time. Therefore, in March 2006, he played a key role in the Georgian government's attempt to revive the Georgian-Abkhaz Coordinating Council.

UN ambassador

On September 11, 2006, he took up his post as UN Ambassador to New York. He retained his role as special representative for Abkhazian affairs. On May 12, 2008, he met with the Abkhaz government in Sukhumi for a publicly screened discussion .

According to Georgian newspapers, President Saakashvili offered him the post of prime minister in October 2008, which he refused because of a lack of control over the Ministry of Interior and Defense.

Opposition politician

On December 4, 2008, he resigned as UN ambassador. In a newspaper interview a month earlier , he had criticized the political processes that led to the 2008 Caucasus conflict . He returned to Georgia and on February 23, 2009 founded the New Alliance opposition alliance with the Georgian opposition parties, the Republican Party and the New Conservative Party, Nowas . The alliance elected him chairman and ran him as a presidential candidate.

On July 16, 2009, he founded Our Georgia Free Democrats party . In 2012 the party joined the Georgian Dream Alliance . In the 2012 election, Alassania ran in Zugdidi to no avail for the Georgian parliament. Georgia's future Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili nominated him on October 8, 2012 as Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. He also remained Minister of Defense in the government of his successor, Irakli Gharibashvili, until he was fired on November 4, 2014. Alassania is married and has two children.
