The Iris versicolor ( Iris versicolor ), also Iridescent iris called, is a plant of the genus Iris ( Iris ).

features

The differently colored iris is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 80, rarely up to 100 centimeters. The rhizome has a diameter of 1 to 2.5 cm. The stem is round in cross-section and as long or longer than the leaves. It is pithy, upright and not very branched. The basal, parallel- veined leaves are 35 to 60 centimeters long, 1 to 2, rarely up to 3 centimeters wide, riding in two lines and pink at the base.

The compact inflorescences are two- to four-flowered. The hermaphrodite flower is purple, blue-purple or lavender in color. The "hanging leaves" are 4 to 7.2 cm long, 1.8 to 4 cm wide and spread out. The plate is often hairy and has a greenish yellow, white bordered central spot. The nail is veined yellow and purple. The flowering period extends from June to August.

The capsule fruit is triangular to almost round, three-ribbed and has a beak. The dark brown, D-shaped seeds are 5 to 8 mm in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72, 84 or 108.

Occurrence

This species occurs in temperate to cool, eastern North America from Virginia and Wisconsin to southeastern Manitoba and Newfoundland in swamps and on waterfronts.

It is considered a "willow weed ". In Germany it is considered a naturalized neophyte . Here it occurs in nutrient-rich waters in southeast Germany.

use

Ornamental plant

The different colored iris has been in cultivation since 1732 at the latest. It is seldom cultivated as an ornamental plant on the banks of water. A few varieties were bred, for example Kermesina with reddish- purple flowers.
