Irma Goecke

Irma Goecke (* 1895 in Paris , † 1976 in Munich ) was a German tapestry artist .

Life

Raised in France and Belgium, in 1914, after the death of her Belgian father, she moved with her sister and her German mother to live with her mother's family in Düsseldorf . From 1914 she attended the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts , and in 1916 and 1917 the teaching establishments of the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin. She was then the first woman to be admitted to the Düsseldorf Art Academy and studied commercial graphics with Ernst Aufseeser . During this time she developed an interest in embroidery and picture knitting . From 1918 to 1920 she ran her own studio for textile design and execution in Düsseldorf. In 1919 she was a founding member and board member of the artist group Das Junge Rheinland and a member of the Rhenish Secession. From 1920 to 1940 she headed the textile class at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dortmund , from 1940 to 1960 the class for textile art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg . From 1941 to 1966 she was artistic director of the Nuremberg Gobelin Manufactory, where she worked with artists such as Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Herbert Bayer . On May 9, 1961 she received the Bavarian Order of Merit and the silver medal of the city of Paris.

In the time of National Socialism Goecke became a member of the NSDAP . She produced tapestries for the Nazi party rally grounds and for SS accommodations. After the end of the Second World War , Goecke was removed from office by the US occupation authorities; during the denazification , she was initially classified as a fellow traveler.
