Irma von Cube , or Irmgard VonCube , Irmgard von Cube , Irma von Cube-Kalser (born December 26, 1899 in Hanover , † July 25, 1977 in Los Angeles ), was a German writer and screenwriter .

Life

Born in Hanover in 1899 at the time of the German Empire , von Cube began her artistic career in the 1920s as a writer and actress. From 1928 she wrote screenplays, mainly film comedies , less often film dramas . She worked several times with Anatole Litvak . Together with Karl Farkas, Irma von Cube wrote the texts for the three sound film hits Wienerlied , Perfume Song and Advertisement Song from Sehnsucht 202 (music by Richard Fall ).

Together with her husband, the actor Erwin Kalser , she left Germany in 1933 after the National Socialists came to power. She initially lived with Kalser in Switzerland and took part in Litvak's historical drama Mayerling and other French films.

In 1936 she accepted an invitation from MGM boss Louis B. Mayer to Hollywood. There she earned a good reputation as a screenwriter, who repeatedly provided scripts without naming names and some story templates. In 1949 she was nominated for an Oscar in the category Oscar / Best Adapted Screenplay with Allen Vincent for Silent Lips .

Origin and family

Irmgard, as her full first name was, came from the German-Baltic noble family of the von Cube , who came from the Margraviate of Brandenburg and had settled in Livonia at the beginning of the 18th century . Her father was the architect Gustav Hermann von Cube (born October 25, 1873 in Menton , France ; † May 31, 1931 in Duisburg), who was his first marriage to Maria (Mamy) Sternheim (March 26, 1879 in Berlin ; † 25 March 1922 in Munich ), a sister of Carl Sternheim , was married.

She was married to the actor Erwin Kalser (born February 22, 1883 in Berlin, † March 26, 1958 in Berlin). Her son Konstantin Kalser (born September 4, 1920 in Munich; † July 30, 1994 in Southampton, New York) was a photographer, film producer and film director .
