Life

Irshad Manji was born in 1968 in Uganda as the daughter of an Indian and an Egyptian . The family moved to Canada three years later when the dictator Idi Amin expelled all South Asians from Uganda.

Irshad Manji is a member of the Twelve Schia , an avowed feminist and lesbian . Accordingly, her journalistic activities are primarily directed against the oppression of women and homosexuals in Islamic society. Her book Der Aufbruch (English original title: The Trouble with Islam Today ), in which she deals with “the humiliating treatment of women by Muslims, the“ Jew-bashing ”, in which so many Muslims are constantly involved, and the ongoing scourge slavery in Islamist-ruled countries ”and supports Israel's right to exist , has been published in 30 languages. The New York Times calls it " Osama bin Laden's greatest nightmare". She is a representative of Ijtihad , rational Islamic law and "enlightened" theology.

Her 2011 book Allah, Liberty and Love was banned in Malaysia because it "insults Islam" and contains views that "could mislead society," according to the Malaysian Interior Ministry. During a promotion tour for the book, the police in the Indonesian capital Jakarta broke off a speech after 15 minutes after supporters of the Front Pembela Islam ("Front of the Defenders of Islam") gathered in the cultural center there and demanded the end of the event . The activists accused her of promoting homosexuality among Muslims.
