Isabella Hedwig Franziska Natalia Princess of Croÿ-Dülmen , Archduchess of Austria-Teschen (born  February 27, 1856 in Dülmen , † September 5, 1931 in Budapest ) was a German noblewoman .

Life

Isabella came from the old noble family de Croÿ , who originally came from the county of Ponthieu in Picardy and was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. She was the daughter of Duke Rudolf von Croÿ and his first wife, Princess Natalie von Ligne .

Isabella married Archduke Friedrich of Austria on October 8, 1878 at the Château L'Hermitage near Condé-sur-l'Escaut . The young archduchess supported her husband in his work. She mastered the household and the upbringing of nine children in an exemplary manner. Isabella was a socially committed woman. She promoted the craftsmanship of Hungarian women by founding schools and was enthusiastic about the music of the Roma . She was a gifted photographer and was passionate about playing tennis. She was also derisively called Busabella because of her obesity .

Ironically, a scandal broke out on the in-house tennis court in 1898. The gold pocket watch of Emperor Franz Joseph I's nephew , Franz Ferdinand , who had been in Halbturn Castle for several weeks , was found there. I was very disappointed not to find the picture of one of her daughters in the watch - as had been hoped - but the portrait of her own lady-in-waiting Sophie Chotek , the daughter of an insignificant professional diplomat. The story became even more embarrassing when the heir to the throne confessed his love and married the lady-in-waiting despite all odds. The heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, were murdered by Serb rebels in Sarajevo in 1914. After the First World War , Isabella vigorously supported efforts to win the Hungarian throne for her son Albrecht.

Archduchess Isabella lies with her husband Friedrich in Hungarian Altenburg (West Hungary) in the parish church “St. Gotthard ”buried.
