Elias of Bourbon-Parma (1903)

Elias Robert Karl Maria Pius of Bourbon-Parma (born July 23, 1880 in Biarritz , France , † June 27, 1959 in Friedberg , Austria ) was titular Duke of Parma and Piacenza , Prince of Bourbon and head of the House of Bourbon-Parma .

Life

Elias was the fourth son of Robert I (1848-1907), the last Duke of Parma , and his first wife, Princess Maria Pia of Naples-Sicily (1849-1882), the daughter of King Ferdinand II and the Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria .

Together with his twenty-three siblings, he grew up in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and England. Despite his father's loss of the throne, the family had considerable fortunes, including real estate near Schwarzau (Austria) and the Villa Pianore (Italy), as well as the Château de Chambord (France).

After the death of his father in 1907, he had six of his siblings from his father's first marriage declared underage in an Austrian court because they were mentally and physically disabled. He was supported by his stepmother, Infanta Maria Antonia of Portugal (1862-1959). This made him the legal guardian of his older siblings and the sole heir to the family property.

His younger half-brothers Sixtus and Franz Xaver sued him in order to get a larger share of the ducal property. However, a French court in Paris rejected their claims.

Elias of Bourbon-Parma served in the Austro-Hungarian Army and achieved the rank of colonel .
