Isaiah Simmons (born July 26, 1998 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American football player serving in various positions in defense. He played college football for Clemson University . In the 2020 NFL Draft , he was selected eighth by the Arizona Cardinals .

Early years

Simmons was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended Olathe North High School in Olathe , Kansas . He was rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports. In high school, Simmons first played as a running back and later as a wide receiver and safety .

college

From 2016 to 2019, Simmons played college football . He attended Clemson University and played there for the Clemson Tigers in the NCAA Division I FBS.

In his first season, Simmons put in a red shirt year . In 2017 he played mainly as safety before he was used in several positions from the following season. In the 2019 season he played again in several positions. Nominally listed as a linebacker , he won the Butkus Award for best college football player in that position. In addition, Simmons was named Unanimous All-American and Defensive Player of the Year in the Atlantic Coast Conference . After successfully completing his degree in Sports Communications, Simmons signed up for the 2020 NFL Draft, foregoing a possible fourth year of college. With Clemson he won the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in 2018 .

Overall, Simmons ran in 40 games for Clemson, in which he scored 148 tackles and 11.0 sacks and caught four interceptions.

NFL

At the NFL Combine , Simmons ran the 40 yard dash in 4.39 seconds, the second-best linebacker time since 2003. He was seen by analysts as an early first-round pick, mostly within the top 10. Simmons was selected eighth by the Arizona Cardinals .

Play style

Simmons is characterized by its positional versatility. For Clemson he played both as a linebacker , but also as a defensive end , cornerback and safety .
