Isidor Traube (born March 31, 1860 in Hildesheim , † October 27, 1943 in Edinburgh ) was a German physical chemist .

Life

Isidor Traube was the son of a wealthy German-Jewish businessman and, according to his interests, began studying chemistry with August Wilhelm von Hofmann and physics with Hermann Helmholtz at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin after graduating from high school , before receiving his doctorate in 1882 . Subsequently, after completing military service, in the spring of 1883 he took up an assistant position with August Bernthsen at the University of Heidelberg , where he dealt with acridine , a raw material for paint production. Already six months later, Traube changed, he didn't want a job in industry, to the assistant position offered to him to Prof. Freitag at the Agricultural Academy in Bonn-Poppelsdorf . In the summer of 1887 he left Bonn and opened a technical-chemical laboratory together with Guido Bodländer, which was closed in 1890.

Thereafter, Traube moved to Berlin , where he completed his habilitation in physical chemistry in 1891 . There he was given a lectureship in colloid chemistry in 1896 , before he was transferred to the extraordinary professorship in physical chemistry in 1900 , which he held until 1934. In addition, Traube was in charge of the colloid chemistry laboratory. In 1934, Traube, supported by Scottish colleagues, emigrated to Edinburgh after he had previously been exposed to intolerable reprisals by the National Socialists, for example he was denied access to his laboratory. In Edinburgh, Traube was given its own laboratory at the University of Edinburgh as well as an apartment nearby.

Isidor Traube has published over 200 papers, for example on osmosis , capillary action and surface tension . He discovered the constant increase in surface activity within a homologous series, the Traubesche rule named after him . To this end, he also carried out physical-chemical examinations of body fluids. In 1914 he founded the International Journal of Physico-Chemical Biology.
