Isildurs Bane is a progressive rock band from Sweden that has undergone extensive musical development with continuous style and line-up changes and today sees itself as an electronic chamber orchestra .

Band history

The band's early works were initially located in the wake of the symphonic progressive rock of the Camel School with a smooth transition to jazz rock and combined electrical and acoustic elements with Swedish singing. Four members of the founding formation, which consisted of 15 to 19 year olds in 1976, emerged from the band Amsaga . The band name Isildurs Bane is one of the names for the " One Ring " in JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings , both in Swedish and in English .

The first major change came with the publication of Cheval - Volonté De Rocher in 1989. Keyboardist Mats Johansson had taken on the compositional work, the pieces were now largely instrumental, were recorded in collaboration with an orchestra and took influences from contemporary classical music and music Zappaesque music on. This style was further refined on the following albums.

In 1997 the MIND project took shape, which includes the band's five most recent releases. The abbreviation stands for Music Investigating New Dimensions , and in fact the albums are characterized by constant change: While MIND Vol. 1 is a studio recording of chamber music material with sophisticated arrangements, the second album in the series again offers mostly new material in a live recording with a large symphony orchestra and a playing time of 155 minutes. The third part, on the other hand, focuses on free improvisation . For MIND Vol. 4: Pass , vocals were added for the first time since the early days of the band. ArtPop songs in the tradition of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush alternate with sound painting interludes.

In 2005 Mind Vol. 5 - The Observatory was released as a concert DVD, which contains a complete performance of Vol. 4 and merges it with seamlessly integrated earlier recordings, scenes from everyday touring and surrealistic effects to form an art film. Guest singer and guitarist Mariette Hansson wrote four singer-songwriter pieces for the intro and as a bonus , which were orchestral arranged by Mats Johansson and later released as an EP Songs from the Observatory .

In December 2005 the IB Expo took place for the first time in Halmstad . Renowned musicians such as Mick Karn (bassist with Bill Bruford , Japan , Kate Bush ) and Jerry Marotta (drummer with Peter Gabriel , Ani DiFranco , Paul McCartney , Tony Levin Band) were invited to participate in the development of new material and this afterwards live perform. There the band made contact with Steve Hogarth , the singer of the band Marillion . In 2017 the band released the album Colors Not Found in Nature with Hogarth .

With the IB Expo in 2017, a collaboration began with the singer of the band Van der Graaf Generator Peter Hammill , which resulted in the release of the joint album In Amazonia in 2019 . Guest musician Tim Bowness , who appears with Steven Wilson in the band No-Man , and Koto player Karin Nakagawa also play a major role on the album .
