With around 170,000 inhabitants, Isla del Carmen is the island with the highest population of any island in Mexico, followed by Cozumel . In terms of population density , it is only surpassed by Isla Mujeres . In terms of area, it is the ninth largest island in Mexico.

Isla del Carmen is a flat island with an elongated floor plan. Together with Isla Aguada in the northeast (the westernmost branch of the Peninsula El Palmar peninsula ) it closes the Laguna de Términos from the open Gulf of Campeche , part of the Gulf of Mexico .

The city of Ciudad del Carmen, located at the southwestern end of the island, has almost the entire island population (169,466 of 169,725 inhabitants in the 2010 census). The second largest place Las Brisas del Mar ( 18 ° 41 ′  N , 91 ° 44 ′  W ) had 62 inhabitants, followed by Punta del Este ( 18 ° 42 ′  N , 91 ° 41 ′  W ) with 17. Otherwise there are 42 Hamlets and individual settlements with a population between 1 and 14.

In the southwest, the Puente de Zacatal bridge leads to the mainland of the Atasta peninsula . In the northeast, the Puente de la unidad bridge leads to Isla Aguada . The federal road Carretera Federal 180 runs over the mentioned bridges and lengthways through the island, which leads back to the mainland in the northeast at Isla Aguada (currently no island , formerly Isla Puerto Real ). The Puente de Zacatal was completed in 1994 and the Puente de la unidad in 1982.
